A dog ice cream van with free frozen treats & advice

A dog friendly ice cream van is driving around in the UK to provide free frozen treats for dogs in anticipation of the upcoming heatwave. Run by Pets at Home, the van also offers expert advice to help owners keep their pets cool during high temperatures.

A recent study revealed that 63% of dog owners worry about their pets getting too hot. However, around 41% of these owners are unsure how to assist their dogs in dealing with the heat.

Among them, 35% use water to cool their dogs, often through swimming. Additionally, 21% pour ice-cold water on their pets' paws and heads. These approaches are not advised.

A Pets at Home expert, who looked into the thoughts of 2,000 dog owners, said, "We care about our pets and want to do right by them”. But this study shows that many owners aren't sure how to help their dogs stay cool in the hot summer.

“Dogs don’t sweat like humans and instead cool themselves down by panting – but on really hot days, they’re likely to need extra help to bring their temperature down and avoid overheating."

Owners are aware of ways to keep dogs cool: 70% avoid hot rooms, 60% use cooling mats. In summer, 78% walk dogs during cooler times, 65% avoid hot pavements. Owners halt walks at 24°C on average. For car rides, 56% pick cooler times, 55% offer water breaks. Despite risks, 57% maintain park visits, only 19% use pet sunscreen.

Here are five essential tips to keep your pets cool in hot weather:

1- Recognize heat stroke signs
Know the signs of heatstroke, such as rapid breathing, lethargy, and unusual behavior.

2 - Keep them hydrated
Drop ice cubes in their water bowl for hydration, ensuring they're the right size and supervising their enjoyment.

3 - Provide shade
Bring a windbreak or tent for outings, offering a cool place away from direct sun. Carry ample fresh water.

4 - Be cautious of hot surfaces
Check surface temperature with your hand before allowing your pet to walk. Opt for natural grass, as artificial surfaces heat up quickly. Stick to shaded spots on very hot days.

5 - Use pet-friendly sun cream
Apply pet-friendly sun cream designed to safeguard their skin if they'll be outdoors for long durations.
